The Dragon Boat Festival in English

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is one of the most important traditional festivals in China. It falls on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the lunar calendar, which usually corresponds to late May or early June in the Gregorian calendar. This festival has a long history and carries deep cultural significance, with traditions that have been passed down for thousands of years.

The origin of the Dragon Boat Festival is closely tied to Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet from the Warring States period (475–221 BCE). Qu Yuan was a loyal minister of the State of Chu who cared deeply about his country's future. However, due to political corruption and betrayal, he was exiled. Heartbroken by the fall of his homeland, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Local people were moved by his loyalty and threw rice dumplings into the river to prevent fish from eating his body. Over time, this act evolved into the tradition of eating zongzi during the festival.

Another key custom of the Dragon Boat Festival is dragon boat racing. Teams race colorful dragon boats along rivers and lakes, creating an exciting and vibrant atmosphere. The races symbolize the efforts of local villagers who paddled out in their boats to save Qu Yuan. Today, dragon boat racing has become a popular international sport, drawing participants and spectators from around the world.

In addition to these activities, the festival is marked by other customs such as hanging calamus and mugwort leaves on doors to ward off evil spirits, drinking realgar wine, and wearing perfume pouches filled with fragrant herbs. These practices reflect ancient beliefs in protection and good health.

The Dragon Boat Festival not only honors the memory of Qu Yuan but also embodies values like patriotism, unity, and respect for nature. As it spreads globally, it serves as a bridge connecting cultures and fostering understanding between different communities. Whether through the taste of zongzi, the sound of drums at dragon boat races, or the scent of herbal remedies, the spirit of the Dragon Boat Festival continues to thrive across generations.
